A little bit of the History

The long awaited Wellow Community Bus is nearly with us.

On Monday 29th March 2010, the new 15 seater minibus was brought into Wellow for residents to view prior to buying the vehicle.

More details of how the scheme will work to follow once the bus is delivered. But for now a few photos of the bus before signage is applied:

Ever since Wellow lost its B&NES-subsidised bus service in 2006, the village has been pressing for an alternative way of enabling people to reach shops, services and amenities without relying on the private car. This was identified in the Parish Plan as vital to meet the needs of those without the use of a car - particularly young people and older residents - to reduce traffic through the village and decrease our carbon footprint.

The first step towards a solution came in 2009 when Wellow Parish Council secured a COMMA grant through Community Action, acting for ACRE (Action for Communities in Rural England), sufficient to buy a 15-seater minibus. Popular demand was confirmed by a new survey, which also produced several volunteer drivers for the minibus. Volunteer drivers are likely to be the mainstay of a demand-responsive community bus, but a part-time paid driver will be needed for the regular daily trips. Several local businesses have already come forward with offers of sponsorship, and more are keenly awaited. All sponsors will have their logo prominently visible on the bus.

B&NES Councillor Neil Butters has been an active supporter, and, in liaison with the Parish Council, has helped secure funding from B&NES to help in the first year of operation. Once the funding has been received, a part-time paid driver can be recuited and the commuter trips begin.

Setting up a successful community bus scheme is a complicated business. A committee has been established, and a constitution adopted for Wellow Community Bus Group, with a sizeable initial membership. The committee is drawing on the experience of successful community bus schemes elsewhere, notably Congresbury and Wrington. The committee is hoping to be able to arrange training for the volunteer drivers in late April. 'We still need more help' said Chairman Peter Downey, 'so please get in touch if you could be an occasional driver, or if you'd like to join the committee. Phone me on 837979, or Rosemary Todd on 837314 for more information.'

At the time of writing , everyone is looking forward to the arrival of the bus and the launch of our new community service - we hope by the end of May.
