The Parish of Wellow
May 2011
An
unwelcome surprise by the Rector,
[17] You have wearied the LORD with your words. “How have we wearied him?” you ask. By saying, “All who do evil are good in the eyes of the LORD, and he is pleased with them” or “Where is the God of justice?”[3:1] “See, I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come,” says the LORD Almighty.[2] But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand when he appears? For he will be like a refiner's fire or a launderer's soap. [3] He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver. Then the LORD will have men who will bring offerings in righteousness, [5] “So I will come near to you for judgment. I will be quick to testify against sorcerers, adulterers and perjurers, against those who defraud labourers of their wages, who oppress the widows and the fatherless, and deprive aliens of justice, but do not fear me,” says the LORD Almighty. (Malachi 2:17-3:3, 5)
Anyone who has ever listened to Handel's Messiah will be familiar with these words of the prophet Malachi. They make sobering reading, not least because those to whom they were first addressed were convinced they were more than ready to welcome God's promised deliverer, and assured of his approval when he came. From Malachi came the call to think again, to 'wake up and smell the coffee' - a warning that the day of the Lord would be anything but welcome. Why? Because their lives were a pale shadow of what the Messiah would expect from them. Their expectation of God's blessing had become divorced from their daily lives, and the result, warned the prophet, would be an unpleasant shock.
There is a danger that we today can make the same mistake. We may believe that we are ready to face God's judgement, whenever and however that may come, but before we sit back complacently we would do well to examine our consciences, assess our lifestyles and ask whether everything in our life is quite as it should be. Fail to do that, and we may find the day of the Lord not quite the occasion we like to imagine.

PARISH COUNCIL
The Parish Council met Monday 11th April attended by seven members of the public.
Main points of interest: Six decisions on planning applications have been received of which, one caused considerable consternation i.e. Bubblers Dytch for the erection of a new three bedroom dwelling in the garden of the existing dwelling. B&NES have agreed to permit the development in spite of the view of the parish council which opposed the application. A number of the points raised were taken on board by B&NES but they say it will not be possible to build the new dwelling unless the public sewer is diverted without including it as a condition of approval.
One new application for Corner House,
Members heard of proposals for village signage as part of the traffic calming measures package from Cllr Watson and local artist Cathy Beale which were thought be of merit. Full details of the final proposal will be displayed for public comment before confirmation. We are expecting the results of a traffic speed survey recently undertaken which will give some indication of how successful the recently introduced measures have been.
For full details of the meeting please see the minutes published on the parish notice board or website.
The date of the next meeting is Monday 9th May at 8pm in the village hall.
Finally: In recent weeks I have called for parishioners to consider volunteering to stand as councillors as it appeared that none of the existing council were restanding. I would like to place on record my thanks to the twenty or so parishioners who turned up to hear about the work of parish councils and councillors. I was able to advise that three of the current council had decided to offer themselves for re election. I am now able to further advise that six parishioners have submitted themselves for election and as the compliment for the council is nine, all candidates have been elected unopposed. I’m sure the new council will do its best for the parish in the interesting times ahead. I wish them every success. Alex Martin

LOCAL THERAPIST
Mari Bartholomew has been practising Shiatsu (with individuals, Complementary Health Centres, Hospital and Care Homes) most of the last 20 years. She qualified in 1991 in this meridian based therapy, which is similar to Acupuncture, only without needles! It is also sometimes called Japanese physiotherapy. Shiatsu is a whole body therapy which can help many conditions including back problems, migraine, stress, and also for general relaxation and preventative care.
In 2009 Mari also qualified in EFT - Emotional Freedom Technique & Matrix Re-Imprinting, which is a safe, simple and effective modern psychotherapy system. This taps into the meridian system of the body while gently identifying and releasing the causes of with-held negative emotions, memories and traumas from the past. Resulting belief systems that have been created such as failure, unworthy, incompetent, victim, fear of success, (which sub-consciously runs 95% of our lives now!) are subsequently cleared. EFT works well with most physical conditions and fears - flying, public speaking, heights, phobias etc.
EFT & MR. has successfully shown a great many people world-wide how to change their sub-conscious negative beliefs and replace these positively and affectively towards becoming a whole person, and who we are truly meant to be. Mari works from home in Wellow.
