MOTHERING SUNDAY 2004

This month the Family Service will be held on Sunday, 21 March for Mothering Sunday and since this is such a special day there will be lots of involvement and participation from the children (and especially Dad's!). Children, along with their Fathers or another adult, are invited to come to church at 10.30 am to make gifts for their Mother and the other women in the Church, these will then be presented during the service. {short description of image} Meanwhile the Mums can relax at home and come along to St Julian's at their leisure in time for the service. Children of all ages are very welcome to come and join in. In the meantime here is a picture for colouring, which tells you a bit about the theme for this month's service. Do bring your coloured picture to the service on Mothering Sunday and we will show them to the grown-ups.

CHURCH NEWS Father Hugh took his last service on 22nd February at St Julian’s as Rector before leaving to take up his new post as team vicar of the Lower Wylye and Till Valley Parishes at Salisbury. Father Brian Sutton, who is very popular with everyone, will take most of our services for the immediate future and we thank him for helping us out during the Interregnum. Mothering Sunday service on 21st March will be at 11.15 am instead of 9.30 am and will be taken by our Reader Jo Vening.

The Annual Parochial Church Meeting will be held on Sunday, 28th March at 10.30 am before the morning service. This is an opportunity for members of the Electoral Roll to hear what has been happening at St Julian’s during 2003 and to elect the new members of the Parochial Church Council for what is going to be a very important year. Written reports will be available a few weeks prior to the meeting.

Once again we will be decorating the Church with flowers for Easter Sunday, which is on 11th April. If anyone would like to make a donation in memory of a loved one would they let Clover Holland, our Treasurer have it at least a week before with the names they wish to remember so they can go on a memorial list in the Hungerford Chapel. We shall be decorating the church at 10.00 am on Saturday, 10th April. If anyone has any greenery or flowers to spare please bring them to the Church at 10.00 am. Anyone who would like to do a case of flowers would they get in touch with me Joyce Mannings on 833335 as soon as possible. We would like lots of children to come and help make an Easter Garden, the garden was beautiful last year and remained in the church until Ascension Day. Please come and, if you can, bring something put in the garden.

LENT LECTURES AT WELLS CATHEDRAL will be given, this year by Melvyn Matthews acting Dean of the Cathedral. He has chosen as his subject A Way of Seeing' and says that these presentations "will show how our contemporary post-modern condition enables us to recover the spiritual traditions of the past". Canon Matthews will talk about how the present post-modern malaise of society is an opportunity for people of faith to reach back behind the modern period, dominated by rational enquiry, to the earlier spiritual traditions of the church and find there sustenance for life in today's confusions. He will look at the mystical tradition represented by Meister Eckhart, at Julian of Norwich, the woman medieval mystic who lived in Norwich, at Thomas Traherne, the seventeenth century clergyman whose writings have only recently been discovered, and at two Jewish writers, Paul Celan and Etty Hillesum, who write in the wake of the European Holocaust.

Canon Matthews is well known in the Church of England for his work in spirituality. He was the Director of the Ammerdown Centre for Spiritual Renewal for six years and has written a number of books in this field, the most important of which is ‘Both Alike to Thee' (SPCK). His most recent book is a collection of sermons preached in Wells Cathedral entitled ‘Nearer than breathing.' (SPCK). He has also been a columnist in the Church Times

These presentations will use computer generated illustrations and will be held in the nave of Wells Cathedral on five Wednesdays beginning on March 3rd at 7.30 pm. All are welcome and there is a retiring collection for the work of Theology in Wells.

Further details from Wells Cathedral Office Tel 01749 674483. If anyone from Wellow would like a lift to Wells please contact either Colin or Jill Tremellen 833506.

THE LATE DOROTHY STONE Alan would like to thank everyone who gave their support in the sad loss of his dear sister Dot. Special thanks to Frank for his kind words and to the Vicar of St. Julian’s Church for conducting the service. He would also like to thank everyone who came to the service and for all the lovely flowers and donations kindly received for her chosen charity the RSPCA. Also thank you to Eric and Suzanne at the Fox and Badger.

WELLOW PARISH COUNCIL MEETING held on 23rd February 2004

Consideration is being given to the 757 Bus Service. The council is proposing that this service should be improved by shortening the journey time to Bath from 40 minutes to 30 minutes. This will be achieved by not routing through Southstoke. This should also mean that there is one extra service to Bath per day. It is hoped that these improvements can be achieved by early April.

Councillors and some members of the public are preparing the Parish Plan but the time schedule is very tight. The team would benefit from extra volunteers to help with the process.

There is a proposal by B&NES to introduce Quiet Lanes to rural areas and some of the lanes around Wellow may well be selected for the project. Mr Elvin would be interested to hear your views on 01225 834834.

The Parish Council supported the following Planning Applications:

Approval has been given by B&NES to the following applications:

The next meeting will be held on 15th March at 8.00 pm in the Village Hall

WHAT'S FOR DINNER TODAY? A visit to the Parlour Shop might help you find the answer. We now stock small packs of meat - chops, steak, sausages and so on - fresh or from the freezer, in addition to what has been ordered. It is all delivered from an excellent family butcher - Mitchard's of Westfield - and comes in on Tuesdays and Fridays.

At the A.G.M. on 19th February the Treasurer, John Woods, reported that in 2003 the shop had its highest turnover so far, though there had been an overall loss of £215. The redecoration of the stockroom and the purchase of a new freezer had meant a good deal of expense, but the shop had benefited from a generous donation and from grants from Community Action and the Parish Council - all very much appreciated. A very small weekly increase in takings would have turned a loss into a profit. Let's try for it in 2004.

WOW!!!!!! A big thank you to all those who made the History of Wellow Talk such a success, especially Mr Chedgy for a fantastic slide show presentation, and to Gordon Hewlett for his wonderful display boards, we are very grateful to you both.

The Wine Tasting and History of Wellow Talk raised a staggering £830.93 for the Village Hall, a great start to a year of fund raising events. Your support is greatly appreciated and we look forward to seeing you at future events.

FROM THE PAST So many parishioners attended the 1894 Vestry that the meeting was adjourned to the schoolroom. The state of Wellow roads was to be discussed. Benjamin Coles complained of deep water running across the road at Shoscombe school and Eckweek lane; and William (of the Pump Trough) Cole of the stones used by the Highway Board, they were too large and not rolled in quickly enough, he called for them to be smaller before being delivered.... Another steam roller was required.... There were only three men dealing with the 42 miles of parish roads. The Vicar said "the stones had lamed one of his horses and broken a spring of his dog cart. He would write to the Board saying the roads were quite impassable; one could neither ride, drive, walk, nor bicycle over them".... William Andrews added "the whole road from the Red Post to Hinton Charterhouse was in a disgraceful condition".

Mr Foxcroft, Chairman of the Highway Board, read the Wellow letter, it reported verbatim the details raised at the Vestry including 'One could neither walk, ride drive nor bicycle over them.' The complaint, Mr Foxcroft said, was a serious indictment against the management of the Board. "Allowing for the inevitable exaggeration which pervaded such complaints as this, he accepted there was a certain amount of truth in the letter". Wellow was a very difficult place; the expenditure was heavy, out of all proportion to what was received from the parish rate, and Wellow was unfortunate in that it had no main road through the village, that made things uncomfortable. The Board was always willing to attend to any reasonable representation made by the Waywardens, but due attention to economical considerations was indispensable at the present time. They certainly could not promise to buy another steam roller. While they always hoped to maintain the roads in a proper state they could not undertake any further expenditure in the parish at the present time
