WELLOW CHURCH AND PARISH NEWS
JUNE 2001
Churchwardens: Mrs. J. H. Mannings, Mr. J. R. Wyld
A NEW GROUP MINISTRY
| This month will
be a particularly busy time for our Parish. Friday 15th to Sunday 17th June will be a special time for us. Please read the Church News on Page 3 and the full-page flyer on Page 8. They give information about our forthcoming Flower Festival entitled "Wellow Through the Ages" presented by the Farmborough Floral Art Group and organized by Jenny Nixon, Libby Kerr and Joyce Mannings. Sunday 17th June is our Patronal Festival this year and the preacher at the Morning Service will be the Bishop of Bath and Wells, The Rt Revd Jim Thompson. We are looking forward to welcoming Bishop Jim to the Parish on this splendid occasion. On the Sunday evening of 17th June, at St Julians, there will be a very special Deanery Evensong beginning at 6.00pm. The service will mark a milestone in the history of our Parish, as it will be the occasion when the Archdeacon of Bath, The Venerable Bob Evens, will commission the newly enlarged Group Ministry. Twenty-one years ago the Camerton Group Ministry was established. There were five parishes in the Group: Peasedown St John, Wellow, Camerton, Dunkerton and Foxcote with Shoscombe. According to the original Constitution of the Group Council in 1980, its main function was of a financial nature - to determine the allocation of the Deanery Quota shared between the parishes of the Group. A secondary function was to "discuss matters of common concern to the five parishes and attempt to develop methods for them to work together." In the first few years of the Group, the Council fulfilled the task of quota allocation until the pattern of payments reverted once more to the individual parishes. |
Over the first ten years, people in the parishes were drawn closer together in worship and study. The clergy led worship in each others Churches, and visited the three Church Schools in the Group on a regular basis, sharing the task of leading assemblies. By 1990, following a change of clergy staffing and the intervening interregna, the Group Ministry became dormant until November 1999 when the Archdeacon of Bath rejuvenated the Group Council. Since then the Council has met on several occasions. Last year, the five Parochial Church Councils of the Camerton Group were delighted to welcome the Parishes of Timsbury and Priston into an enlarged Group Ministry. The Churchwardens, Clergy and Readers of the seven parishes have met in Council and also socially. The three Clergy meet together on a weekly basis for prayer and discussion. In December 2000, the Bishop of Bath and Wells formally requested the formation of an enlarged Group Ministry, which received Royal Assent at a meeting of the Privy Council held on 14th May 2001. The scheme will come into effect on 1st June 2001. As I have said above, the Archdeacon of Bath will commission the new Group Ministry on Sunday 17th June at the Deanery Evensong in St Julians beginning at 6.00pm. I hope that many parishioners will be able to attend the service, which will mark the climax of our beautiful Flower Festival and a new chapter in the life of Wellow Parish as it takes up its role within the new Group of seven parishes. We ask for Gods blessing on our endeavours in the months and years to come Hugh Bonsey |

Other Church News Now good news at last on the heating, the PCC at the meeting on 16th May met with their heating adviser and it was decided to go for an all electric system as the oil system which we thought of having was too costly. As it is we shall have to do this system in phases, because it will cost around £20,000. Now we are going to need lots of help in raising this money so if you have any ideas or can raise money for us in any way we would be pleased to hear from you. We may be able to get some grants but they may only be for minor amounts. If anyone would like to send a donation please send or take them to Mr. Rupert Dewey, Church Farm House, who is now our Treasurer, with cheques made payable to "Wellow PCC". We will be most grateful to receive them large or small - it all counts!
As you will see Mr. Rupert Dewey has now taken over as Treasurer as Mrs. Kathleen Strang is leaving the District to live near her son. Kathleen has been Treasurer for the past four years for which thank her very much; our best wishes go with her. Also it was a sad goodbye to Mrs. Jennifer Matthews who has been an excellent secretary for the past twelve years, Jenny works tirelessly for the church as she also oversees that cleaning gets done among many other things as well. But the good news is she has agreed to stay on the PCC. A very big vote of thanks Jenny for all your hard work, enjoy semi-retirement. It was very difficult to find a replacement as secretary, but Jo Vening our Reader has offered to help out for a year so thanks to her for doing this. So to Jo, Rupert and to Colin Tremellen (a new member of our PCC) welcome to you all and may you spend many happy hours working with the rest of the PCC in Christian fellowship for our beautiful church at St. Julian's.

Charity Quiz Evening (Thursday 7th June)
Just a reminder that the next Charity Quiz Evening will be held in The Fox & Badger at 8pm on 7th June 2001. This month's chosen charity will be the Bristol Area Kidney Patients Association so please try to get together a team and come and enjoy a convivial evening, for a worthwhile cause, on your doorstep for £1.50 per head.
The money raised last month was £85 and has gone to the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Trust. The choice of charities that will receive, all entry money taken on the night, is made by the winners of the previous month's quiz. So, remember if your team, of up to six members, win the night's quiz you choose the charity recipients for next month's quiz. Please come, just turn up with your team and enjoy yourselves and test those "little grey cells" in the process!

Far Eastern Evening May I say how very much I enjoyed the Far Eastern Evening at the Village Hall on April 28th. Erica Smith and Martyn Smith related their experiences in Mongolia and China respectively - in a most interesting and entertaining manner. Erica's photographic and Martyn's video presentation added enormously to the enjoyment. When I saw Erica's Mongolian 'household' on the stage I thought that the items on the little table therein were props - Chinese ginger jar, bottles of drinks, a dubious looking wine pot, etc. - until they were identified as the raffle prizes. That shows our hosts for the evening certainly had eyes for detail! Compliments too, to the Village Hall committee and other helpers involved in the cooking and serving of the meal; very tasty and served with smiles. All in all, an evening to remember, thanks to Erica and Martyn.
