Churchwardens: Mrs. J. H. Mannings, Mr. J. R. Wyld

Matthew, Hannah and Jane Street
We are delighted to report that the Rev'd Matthew Street has been appointed as our new rector for the United Benefice of Peasedown St John with Wellow. He will live in Peasedown at the vicarage next to the church but will actively and enthusiastically look after Wellow.
Matthew is currently the curate at the United Benefice of Combe Down, Monkton Combe and Southstoke, so he does not have far to move. He is aged 43, has a lovely wife Jane and daughter Hannah aged 6. He was ordained a priest in 2002 and before that had a distinguished career in business. He has worked for H J Heinz, Allied Domecq and Samsung Electronics so knows all about food, drink and computers!
Matthew will be licensed as our rector on Thursday, 6 January 2005 and the service of institution will almost certainly be in Peasedown. Until then our Interregnum continues.
The new appointment will, we are sure, herald a really exciting new chapter for Wellow and St Julian's. Matthew has great energy and enthusiasm, he will be keen to reach out to all, churchgoers and non-churchgoers, and we all need to give him every support and encouragement.

CHURCH NEWS WOW, it has happened again. The church was alive to the sound of music on June 15th when the "Cameo Orchestra" gave a concert of light classical and popular music, this talented group of musicians had everyone on their feet in the finale singing 'Jerusalem' and 'Land of Hope and Glory' some even brought their flags to wave (Bravo). Thank you Alan and Jackie Kingston of 'Exclusively Kitchens' who sponsored the orchestra. Our thanks must also go to Susanne and Eric Hobbs of the Fox and Badger who arranged for the orchestra to come and perform and also for doing the licensed bar. Thanks also to Richard Holland who printed the tickets, posters and lovely programmes and to all the ladies who provided the refreshments and to Lyn Doman who made and donated a refreshing fruit cup some with alcohol content, to Susan Hewlett who did the flowers on the welcome tale, to Geoffrey Pike for the use of his tables, to Andy Elvin for collecting the chairs from the Village Hall, and to Claire and Simon Veysey for the use of their field to park cars, and of course, to everyone who came and supported this most enjoyable evening. Approximately £900 was raised for St Julian's Church, a great result. WELL DONE EVERYONE, and thank you all.
On the previous Sunday (20th June) we had a special Fathers' Day service taken by Revd Neville Pierce. Fathers with their children took part in the Service and afterwards a picnic lunch took place at Stoney Littleton Farm, the home of Yvonne and Matthew Small. Our thanks to them for their hospitality.
On 4th July at Family Service we welcomed Harry Carver into the Church; Harry was baptised by the Revd Kevin Tingay, our Reader Jo Vening who also preached led the service. Again it was good to see so many people present.
Jonathan has already written about our new Vicar, Matthew Street and we all look forward to welcoming him with his wife Jane and daughter Hannah to St Julian's, Wellow after his instalment on 6th January 2005 when we will all achieve to work together for the good of the Church and needs of the village.
To all the children who are leaving St Julian's School to start a higher education our thoughts and prayers go with you and we hope you attain what you are looking for in your future careers. And to those little ones about to start on their schooling at St Julian's School WELCOME and we hope you will find lots of happiness there and make many new friends in out excellent village school.
On Thursday, 25th June St Julian's was filled with people paying their last respects to Charlie Kyte who died after a short illness. Charlie was very much a village person although not born in Wellow but having lived here many years and bringing up his family here. He could regularly be seen cutting the grass at St Julian's Church, or the children's playground by the village hall, he was a valued member of Wellow Village Hall Committee, and a keen skittler at the Fox and Badger also their sticker up in later years. Charlie was helpful, kind, and a generous man always ready with a joke and a smile, we shall all miss him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Sylvia and family at this sad time. Rest in Peace Charlie.

CHARLIE KYTE On behalf of my mum and family I would like to say a big thank you for all the kindness and support we received from neighbours and friends during the recent illness and subsequent death of our dad Charlie Kyte. At times like this it is a pleasure to be a part of the Wellow community, which is without a doubt second to none when help is needed. People could not do enough for my dad, an example of this is his garden which as everyone knew was very important to him, it was planted, watered and cared for at all times, giving us one less thing to worry about. More people than I can count called in or phoned to say that if there was anything we needed we only had to ask. The many cards and letters my mum received amazed us all, and last but not least the attendance of my dad's funeral on June 24th was incredible. Thank you again for your kindness and support at such a difficult time. Sally Bullock (child number five, daughter number two)

WELLOW AMATEUR DRAMATIC SOCIETY (WADS)
Recently held a recruitment social evening at the village hall having advertised the event in the July magazine and distributed leaflets to homes in the village. WADS are subsequently disappointed to announce that lack of membership is now threatening the group with closure. A committee meeting has been set for the 24 August 2004 when it is anticipated the final decision to close the society will have to be made. Therefore, should anyone wish to help us avoid this imminent closure we would be most grateful to hear from you. We are not expecting budding Laurence Olivier's (although they will be most welcome) but anyone who wishes to be involved with acting, singing or dancing as a hobby in a social environment. For those of you who are not partial to treading the boards, we are also always pleased to have backstage help with props, lighting, scenery, directing, etc. The group meets at the hall every Tuesday evening from 8.00 pm-10.00 pm for rehearsals when we are staging a production and we generally stage one or two productions per year, usually having a break over the summer period. Having celebrated the 21st anniversary of the foundation of the society last year it is with great sadness that we are now having to make the decision to fold-up the group. If you feel you can help us to avoid this course of action then please contact our Chairman, Mary Messer, on 01225 832732, or our Secretary, Joy Fortune, on 01225 319584.

VILLAGE HALL The Management Committee wish to apologise for the poor state of hall and car park, made worse by recent graffiti on walls and windows, it is intended to tidy up the outside. A contract for under pinning foundations should be placed shortly and is hoped work will start early in September. The cost is expected to absorb a large amount of the available funds. Replacing the outside doors and windows will be considered after the under pinning, should the funds allow. A number of residents would like to see a new hall and the committee agree. So if someone wins the lottery jackpot would they consider financing as this is the only way Wellow will get lottery funding.

FROM THE PAST
An extract from an account of a visit to St Julian's 1876
"The road from Bath to Wellow leads through two or three beautiful Somerset valleys you pass a rushing babbling stream, the Cam, then winding up the road you have a charming glimpse of the house, church and village of Combe Hay Dipping down into an enclosed valley you come upon a church that is one of the most interesting and notable in the neighbourhood. The road is a hard one for horses for it winds up and down dale in a most abrupt fashion. But it passes through pretty country lanes, bordered on either hand by tall hedgerows which on Easter Day were smiling with the tender blossoms of the spring wildflowers" .
"With the exception of the chancel, Wellow church is a fair specimen of the Perpendicular style the tower of Wellow is certainly for effective character by far the finest of its style The east window and much of the interior arrangements of the chancel are new, it having been in the main rebuilt in 1845 The piscine in one corner is, I understand, perfectly unique Leading from the chancel ...is a chapel known as the Hungerford Chapel with a tomb to Dorothy Popham, who died in1614, born a Hungerford,.. whose well known arms are emblazoned everywhere Some fragments of paintings of the twelve apostles remain on the east wall The fine old oak seats with their poppy heads, are I regret to say, the most uncomfortable of seats I suppose the ancestors of the present inhabitants of Wellow used to kneel, not to sit in church for the accommodation in the latter respect is singularly deficient" .
With an invitation to visit St Julian's he says "it is architecturally, archaeologically and artistically a pattern of neatness and conservation. Its position in the landscape is at all points lovely, whether as surrounded by the picturesque cottages of the village or sunk in a wooded valley that may be said to be one of the most charming in the neighbourhood".
In a description of the Easter Day service he includes the decorations "the beautiful bouquets, garlands and bunches of primroses and daffodils. The font bowered in flowers and every monument and bracket adorned .The service was as plain and simple ..as a Low Churchman may demand ... Prayers were said by the vicar (The first Rev Horton) with .singular force and distinction and the sermon delivered with a blunt frankness and directness of speech" and of the parish history . that ffreymond Frip, Gent, who died at Hassage in 1612 gave to the poor of the parish eight pounds of moneye, paid to Henry Light who every yeare payeth sextene shillings to the overseers." It is followed by a quotation from Proverbs "Robbe not the poor because he is poor .for the Lord will plead their cause and spoyle the soul of those who spoyle them"
And of the bells "In the year 1619 the frame of all the bells was new made. And in 1604 " Mr Henry Trevillian, a dyer of London, did give a bell unto this church . which was in weight sexscore and two pounds, whereunto he added a clepper, stock and wheel". During the visit the writer sketched the church from the north, this was 20 years before the present vestry was built.

WELLOW MIDSUMMER TAKE-AWAY QUIZ These sets of questions went on sale on 7th June and frankly sales have been somewhat disappointing to date. It was my intention to put a reminder in July's Parish News but unfortunately I missed the deadline, thereby missing a valuable opportunity to try and boost sales.
So, here we are on the final countdown to closing date 16th August. Can I please make a plea to those who have not yet entered the competition; get along to the Parlour Shop or to my house (address below) and pick up a pack (what a slogan!) at £2.00 each. You will have about two weeks in which to have a go. I do want the quiz to be a success and raise funds for our village hall, and to pass an acceptable cash prize to someone. Thank you in anticipation.

PARISH NEWS Please may I have all copy for the Parish News by the 20th of next month. The print day is always a Friday following the 20th so sometimes there is a bit of flexibility, similarly the day the Newsletter arrives on your doorstep varies. The Church office at St. Philips Church Odd Down prints it for us at a very reasonable cost. We then collate it and deliver it to our distributors throughout the village and to White Ox Mead and Twinhoe. We rely on our volunteers. Please send copy to Jill Tremellen 833506. Or preferably to: jilltremellen@onetel.com Thank you.
